Yes We Can
“Don’t complain, campaign!!” became the thought for the day in Manchester Town Hall.
The importance of campaigning and advocacy was addressed by keynote speakers, Titus Alexander of Novas Scarman Group, John Leech MP and Richard Caulfield of Voluntary Sector North West. The day comprised of a series of interactive workshops looking at a variety of relevant tools and techniques including
- Strategy and planning
- Using Human Rights as a campaigning tool
- The Freedom of Information Act
- Knowing your region
- Neighbourhood and local government
We were treated to an emotive theatre performance by “Certain Curtain” theatre and a discussion ensued around using arts to get a message across.
During the afternoon workshop topics were determined by the conference participants. Issues discussed ranged from funding to volunteering.
The event was a partnership co-ordinated by NCVO and steered locally by several organisations including Novas Scarman Manchester, WEA, CN4M, VSNW, LSEN, GMCVO, Parliamentary Outreach Service, NW Together We Can, Advice UK, Communities for Stability, Five counties Partnership, British Institute for Human Rights and others.
A series of action points were agreed during the plenary. Several of the partners have already committed to taking these forward to ensure there is a growing network of support for campaigning in the region.
