Residents turn Trash into Cash for Charity

08/02/2006

Manchester residents were asked to name the three local charities, community groups or schools that they wanted to cash in on a pilot scheme which has been set up to encourage people to recycle more and reduce waste.

The ‘Turn your Trash into Cash’ pilot incentive scheme is funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural affairs.

The three most nominated charities are:

1st Christie’s Hospital
2nd The Tree of Life Centre Wythenshawe
3rd The Mustard Tree Homeless Charity

The three named charities will receive donations based on the tonnes of glass, cans and paper collected  through  kerbit recycling bins and boxes and at  bringit Neighbourhood Recycling Centres in Manchester from November until February. And if  residents manage to recylce more waste than in the same months  last year these donations will increase dramatically.

Councillor Martin Pagel, Deputy Executive Member for Direct Services, said :
“ We’ve seen a steady increase in recycling in Manchester which is helping to reduce the amount of waste which is needlessly sent to landfill sites. Last year 30,000 tonnes of waste was recycled – that’s about 15% of the total. We want to see even more residents recycling and this scheme provides a great incentive.  Not only can residents decide who  benefits from the scheme, if they manage to increase the total amount recycled then  their favourite causes could be in for a substantial cash windfall.“

Can-Doers in Action

Dyslexic by Nature
The group was created because a number of dyslexic students from Chorlton Workshop were concerned about the lack of help and support for people with dyslexia in the community and the stigma around dyslexia.spacer
